Day 1

FRANCE

Participants meet at Paris Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport. Check-in formalities and flight to Saint Denis de la Réunion.

Dinner and overnight on board.

Day 2

SAINT DENIS - CIRQUE DE SALAZIE - HELL-BOURG

Welcome at the airport by your correspondent.

A bus tour of Saint-Denis, still marked by colonial influences: the "Rue de Paris" with its pretty Creole houses with wrought-iron balconies and verandas decorated with white wooden mantling.

Lunch at "Madame Annibal" (**), renowned for its famous vanilla duck.

Visit the Vanilla House of the Rouloff family, one of the last and most important producers and processors of the famous Bourbon vanilla.

Then on to the Cirque de Salazie: the climb begins on a superb road along the Rivière du Mât, which winds its way through the gorges. You soon discover a veritable garden of greenery and numerous waterfalls, most notably "Le Voile de la Mariée". Highly watered, the Cirque de Salazie is a formidable agricultural reserve: the sugar cane of the lower part has been succeeded by banana trees, bamboo and various vegetable crops such as sage, watercress... and the best-known, the chouchou.

Day 3

CIRQUE DE SALAZIE - HELL-BOURG

Breakfast.

You'll head for the islet of Bemahot.

Stroll through the forest to discover the wild flora and tropical flowers. Arrive at the ilet, where you'll discover the different viewpoints over the village of Hell-Bourg and the surrounding peaks: "cimen def", "roche ecrite", "piton enghain", etc. (Accessible to all, duration approx. 1h30/2h).

After the visit, return to the village of Hell Bourg for lunch in the heart of the village at the "Les Jardins d'Héva" restaurant.

In the afternoon, explore the narrow streets and colorful Creole houses. Visit the Maison Folio, an authentically decorated villa that perfectly evokes life in the days of the Governors. Free time to enjoy the peaceful surroundings at your own pace and stroll through the narrow streets.

Day 4

HELL-BOURG - LE SUD SAUVAGE - LE TAMPON

Breakfast.

Early departure for the Côte Sud Sauvage. Heading for the "Grand Brûlé", you'll discover the successive lava flows that have expanded the island by nearly 30 hectares over the sea.

Visit the Garden of Perfumes and Spices, a veritable natural paradise in the middle of the Mare Longue forest, on an 800-year-old volcanic flow. A guide will show you all the perfume plants and spices: pepper, clove, cinnamon, tea...

Lunch at the "L'étoile de mer" restaurant.

Stroll to discover Cap Méchant and its coastline of very black basalt rock, contrasting with the intense blue of the sea. Following the coast, we pass through Rivière Langevin, St Joseph, Manapany, Petite-Ile and the southern capital, Saint Pierre.

Day 5

LE TAMPON - PITON DE LA FOURNAISE - LE TAMPON

Breakfast.

Early departure for the Piton de la Fournaise volcano. Along this forest road, you won't want to miss the view of La Rivière des Remparts from the "Nez de Bœuf". The edges of this "canyon" bear witness to the first caldera caused by the collapse of the volcano's summit. Then comes the surprising discovery of a lunar landscape, the "Plaine des Sables", also born of the collapse. At the end of this road, you reach the Pas de Bellecombe, from where you can admire the view of Réunion's volcano.

Return via the viewpoint of Grand Bassin, a commune where many families live cut off from the modern world.

Lunch at a farm inn near the volcano.

In the afternoon, we head for the Saga du Rhum, a former distillery in Reunion. The Isautier family has set up a discovery and initiation trail where you can discover rum in all its forms. Taste the thousand and one ways to enjoy this beverage.

Day 6

LE TAMPON - CIRQUE DE CILAOS - ST GILLES

Breakfast.

Departure for the Cirque de Cilaos. We take the coastal road westwards. Then begins the road with its 400-plus bends. It's an extraordinary route, carved out of the rock, where once only a footpath gave access to the nobles with their sedan chairs. As we emerge from the last tunnel, a village of over 5,000 inhabitants opens up to us, overlooking various "ilets" and a panorama dominated by the island's highest peak, the majestic "Piton des Neiges", the second most visited tourist site.

After a Creole lunch in the heart of the cirque at the "Les Sentiers" restaurant, meet "Colette", a MOF embroiderer. Traditional embroidery is unique to Réunion Island, and was created in 1900 to make their famous lace depicting scenes from everyday life.

Continue along a road to the best viewpoint, "La Roche Merveilleuse": from here, you'll have a 360° view of the whole cirque, the village, the paths, the forests... Walk along a gently sloping path through the primary forest. We'll then reach the village of Cilaos, passing close to the only thermal spa, "Irénée Accot", whose hot waters come from the island's original volcano, the Piton des Neiges, just above us at 3071 meters altitude. We'll then return to our bus via the former seminary, built in 1913 as the first presbyteral school, a unique place for the education of Cilaosians (accessible to all and lasting around 1h30).

Continuation along the coast towards the west. Check-in at the hotel and welcome drink.

Day 7

ST GILLES - PITON MAÏDO (MAFATE) - ST PAUL - ST GILLES

Early start via Saint-Gilles-les-Hauts, amidst fields of sugar cane and tamarinds... We climb to over 2,000 meters to the Piton Maïdo, dominating the Cirque de Mafate. This is still one of the most isolated places on Reunion Island, where the inhabitants are supplied on foot or by helicopter. On the way back, we'll stop off at a geranium essence producer, where, in addition to the typical aroma of this essence, we'll be able to immerse ourselves in certain Creole traditions linked to the cultivation of the land.

Continue on to Saint-Paul and its fairground market (FRIDAY ONLY). Stop at the Marin cemetery, where you'll see the graves of buccaneer Olivier le Vasseur and Leconte de Lisle, the famous local poet.

Lunch at La Marmite** restaurant.

Visit the Musée de Villèle. A historic site created in 1974 on a vast colonial property, the former home of Panon-Desbassayns and their descendants the Villèle family. It tells the story of a Creole family who left their mark on Reunion in the 18th and 19th centuries. On the first floor of the manor house, you'll discover furniture and decorative objects that recreate the living environment of this wealthy bourgeois family.
